Brien Aho


Brien Aho is a photographer focused on capturing unguarded moments that reveals the quintessence of human expression.

Brien began his military career in 1991 and has since photographed in 38 countries as a combat camera photojournalist. He has completed tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He is a four-time first place category winner in the Military Photographer of the Year competition and recently won the prestigious Communicator Award for “The Road to Recovery” a photo documentary about burn patient’s recovery.

Brien is actively involved in mentoring young photographers. He is the President of the D.C. chapter of the National Association of Naval Photography and he produces the photography workshop “The D.C. Shoot Off” a workshop to inspire and teach DOD and military photographers and foster relationships between services.

He is also a ten-year veteran of at the Eddie Adams Workshop “Black Team” and was a student in 2003.

Brien has been published in numerous books, and publications throughout the world including National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, GQ, Washington Post and the New York Times. His work appears in many books pertaining to the war in Iraq including the critically acclaimed ‘This Is Our War”.
